The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 was "The Power of Words", and what a powerful evening we shared with more than 120 of us together here at Westminster Synagogue on Saturday night.
Following a Memorial Service led by Rabbi Benji, we watched the film Denial, which dramatises the court case in which Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books successfully defended themselves against Holocaust denier, David Irving. We were privileged to be joined by Richard Rampton, QC, who successfully represented Penguin, and Tom Wilkinson OBE, the award-winning actor, who brilliantly represented Richard in the film. They talked about their emotional involvement in their work, Richard sharing that in this case he felt a huge weight on his shoulders, and Tom speaking of how he was struck by the immensity of Auschwitz in his research. A moving sense emerged over the night of two people who have used the power of words, wielding all the force of their heads and hearts to stand up for truth and share it.
