What is Oneg Shabbat?

Once a month we invite a guest speaker to join us as the community shares a meal together and explore a chosen topic for our new education initiative: Oneg Shabbat. They will be held from 12:45-2:30pm after the Shabbat Morning Service.

Who is the Guest Speaker and what is the Topic?

Our speaker will be Robin Moss, Director of Strategy for UJIA,  who will be exploring "We're all doomed?"

The early Zionists were a pretty pessimistic lot. Whether it was catastrophic violence from without or creeping assimilation from within, they firmly believed that, without a Jewish State, the Jews were doomed. With the benefit of century of hindsight, we’ll see if the prophecies of Herzl, Pinsker, Jabotinsky and others still feel relevant to us in 2019.

Robin Moss is the Director of Strategy for UJIA. He grew up in LJY-Netzer and was a movement worker for two years before coming to work at UJIA. He has worked with young people, students, adults, educators and communities, all with the aim of engaging British Jews in a deep and more nuanced conversation around Israel. He has also educated groups around the world – in Israel, North America and in Australia. Outside of work, he sits on Board of National Officers of Liberal Judaism and tour guides Jewish Europe.

Who can come?

This group is for members of all ages and if there is a particular topic you would like to see covered please let us know.

Do I need to bring anything?

Like a Chavurah Supper, we ask that guests bring a dish to add to our Shabbat Table. This can be a sweet or savoury dish that ideally serves 8-12 people. Dishes must be either fish or vegetarian and must not contain nuts (so if you're cooking, check the recipe, if you're buying check the label!)

Do I need to book in?

Yes. There is no charge to join us for the Oneg, but we have limited seating in the room and so want to ensure that we don't disappoint people.
