Ferdinand de Rothschild and the Waddesdon Bequest to the British Museum: A talk by Liliane Fredericks

Monday, 20 May, 2024 12 Iyar 5784

7:00 PM - 9:00 PMWestminster Synagogue

Recreating the princely taste of the Courts of Renaissance Europe, you will find this evening the somehow uneasy combination of artistic patronage together with a blatant emphasis on wealth!

7:00pm Talk and Q&As, 8:20pm Refreshments

The Waddesdon Bequest is a collection of nearly 300 objects, left to the British Museum in 1898 by Baron Ferdinand Rothschild. It consists of exceptionally important medieval and Renaissance pieces, as well as a number of 19th-century fakes. Together, they paint a fascinating picture of the development of the art market in the late 19th century.

Member Liliane Fredericks is a trained Courtauld Institute of Art (Ba Hon. And MA) and had the privilege to be invited to work at the Manor doing the Inventory of the Furniture in the private apartments of Lord Rothschild for about one year, which has recently been published in French. She has previously given many talks, including one to the National Trust at Waddesdon Manor on the Manor’s magnificent Guardi paintings.  Mrs Fredericks has led tours all around the United Kingdom, having previously been a Blue Badge Guide, Palace of Wesminster Guide, York Guide and Memorial Scrolls Trust Guide.
